In 1968, our founder realized that there were no companies that just specialized in working on water heaters. At that time, you only had a few options. You could call Sears, a plumber, or your Uncle Joe. He thought that Sears, who contracted their work out (he had done their work as a subcontractor) had poor service and offered only their brand of water heater, plumbers usually charged an “arm and a leg” and weren’t famous for their great service either, and “Uncle Joe” would usually want a favor in return and might just mess up and put the pressure relief valve on the cold water inlet.

Our founder developed a business model that included training technicians to a higher standard by concentrating on only one thing: water heaters. They wouldn’t have to know about cleaning drains or the proper setting of a toilet but they would have to know everything about water heaters inside and out. These technicians would be given trucks that would fit their needs so there would be no tangle of sewer cables. They would have every conceivable part a person could require to install or repair a water heater perfectly.

This concept included offering a service like none that had ever been offered for water heater repair or replacement. Telephones would be answered by real, live experienced people no matter what time of the day or night and there would be no extra charges for weekend or holiday service. This concept would make it so we could guarantee that our customers were getting the best service available at the lowest price around.

Another component of this new business model was the creation of the Emergency Shutdown Instruction Sticker that would eventually be direct mailed to millions of homes. This self-adhesive sticker was designed to assist homeowners in shutting down and draining their heaters to avoid damage to their homes from water or gas leakage. It would also serve as a means of connecting potential customers to our services.

And here we are now nearly 55 years later and still going strong!
